Earlier this week I picked up an app called Zombies, Run! and I was finally able to try it last night.
Here’s what the creators say:

Zombies, Run! is an ultra-immersive running game for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and Android. We deliver the story straight to your headphones through orders and voice recordings – and back home, you can build and grow your base with the items you’ve collected.
You automatically collect items like medicine, batteries, and ammo while running – but when you’re back home, who needs them more: the soldiers or the doctors? Which buildings need extra defenses? It’s up to you – and the bigger your base, the more missions you can play.”
I posted their quote because that’s basically correct, as you run you get a fun zombie adventure that enhances your jog in a way normally impossible. Stories not built with this in mind can be too distracting to get a good run, or you end up missing things as you go.
Because this is built with running in mind it gives you time to listen and time to run in a perfect mix of story and your own music.
When you get home you get to take the items you earned while out to make your base stronger and unlock new missions.
The only downside I’ve had so far is that I’m not able to use it on the treadmill has promised because it uses GPS to track speed instead of the accelerometer. While it’s possible to put it in accelerometer mode some of the features I really like are disabled so I choose to just take it outside.
This is the first app from a startup company and updates to fix these kinds of problems are no doubt in the works. I didn’t think it was worth waiting for version 2 to come out when I could be out getting some exercise, but at a 7.99 price point you may disagree.
still, this is a great way to make jogging interesting and get some interval training while you’re at it. If you have a smart phone I recommend it, it’s cool.
I hope this becomes popular because I would love to see some non Zombie related stories too. How about running from aliens on a spaceship or going back in time, you know, hard science!
